Developing: Howell+Glenn Legislation Ends Medicaid Expansion Enrollment October 1st

State Rep. Gary Howell, right, chatting with State Rep. Gary Glenn

By Brandon Hall
(Email Him At WestMIPolitics@Gmail.com)

State Representatives Gary Howell and Gary Glenn have introduced legislation ending enrollment in the state's Medicaid Expansion program.

The bill would prevent new sign-ups after October 1st, subsequently placing conditions on those already on the rolls who would like to renew...

The legislators say the bill is well timed after the U.S. House recently replaced ObamaCare.

According to a press release:

"Glenn and Howell said the legislation is particularly timely given that Congress voted Thursday to repeal ObamaCare and replace federal funding for the state Medicaid program with block grants that would not cover the program’s costs.

When the program began in 2014, the federal government agreed to pay for 100 percent of the additional cost of providing Medicaid benefits to able-bodied adults under the expanded criteria through 2016. But beginning in January, the state must pay for 5 percent of those increased costs, which will double to 10 percent by 2020.

Glenn’s and Howell’s bill would prohibit Michigan’s Health and Human Services department from accepting new enrollees under the expanded criteria into the medical welfare program as of October 1st. The department would be allowed to renew enrollment of current enrollees if they continue to meet eligibility requirements, even though the two GOP lawmakers said even that will likely become financially unsustainable in the state budget.

The legislation would also help redirect Medicaid dollars back to those the welfare program was originally intended to help, “disabled adults or children who are incapable of working to support and help themselves,” Glenn said.

“This is a measure of fiscal responsibility to the taxpayers of Michigan it’s our duty to represent,” Howell said. “I can’t imagine anything more fiscally irresponsible than allowing a welfare program for able-bodied adults -- that’s already financially unsustainable now -- to continue to grow even further.”

Will Calley Shock The World On May 30th And Run For Senate Against Stabenow?

By Brandon Hall
(Email Him At WestMIPolitics@Gmail.com)

I absolutely love the Harry Potter series, JK Rowling's books, the movies, the whole lot. One of Rowling's masterful feats was convincing readers Professor Snape was a friend of the dark side and in cahoots with he who shall not be named.

"You dare use my own spells against me, Potter? It was I who invented them, I'm the Half-Blood Prince!"

That's what Professor Snape snarls to Harry at the end of the 6th film after just killing Dumbledore, a culmination of years of toying with readers. It appeared as though the conventional wisdom was confirmed.

But things were not as they seemed...

In the ultimate switcheroo, Rowling subsequently reveals in the last book that Snape was a good guy the whole time, a double agent who was protecting Harry all along.

With that in mind-and my derping over... Back in the real world, let's take a look at 2018 Michigan politics.

Lt. Governor Brian Calley has a major announcement to make on May 30th, and everyone assumes he will run for Governor. It's been in the script for years. It HAS to happen.

Or does it?

What if the LG shocks the political world and announces he's running for US Senate against Debbie Stabenow instead?

My friend Matt Maddock raised the issue recently, and it makes a lot of sense.

First of all, it allows Calley to avoid a bloody knife fight with Attorney General Schuette, who has been prepping a run for Governor since Calley was a young teen.

Second of all, it gives Republicans a top shelf candidate in the Senate race, something they desperately need.

I also believe conservative voters upset with Calley over various positions would be far more willing to forgive Calley in a race against Do-Nothing Debbie than they would in a Governor's race. Not all, but many.

Almost every vote Stabenow takes is horrendous, with Calley we'd have a strong conservative voice 60-80% of the time at the least. A 180% swing is pretty damn good.

While Calley's record isn't perfect, too often his disappointing moments have completely overridden some great bright spots.

'Member when he broke with Gov. Snyder to back a Part Time Legislature? I 'member. Right To Work passed? Thousands of BS regulations given the #ByeFelicia treatment?

We'll examine Calley's strengths and weaknesses more in the future for sure.

We'll also take a look at other possible candidates, like former Michigan Supreme Court Justice Bob Young.

Young is a mixed bag who undoubtedly has talents, but his history of controversial court rulings is a Dem operative's wet dream. His slow-paced, academic style also doesn't lend well to retail politics, and Debbie would have a field day debating him, at least stylistically.

What will happen on May 30th? Stay tuned, things could get pretty crazy, sometimes conventional wisdom isn't so wise...

Fieger Time? "The Million Dollar Mouth" Leads Gretchen Whitmer In Shocking New 2018 Poll

Fieger

By Brandon Hall
(Email Him At WestMIPolitics@Gmail.com)

In a shocking new poll released last week by Tom Shields of MRG, controversial Detroit attorney Geoffrey Fieger leads former Senate Minority Leader Gretchen Whitmer 26% to 24% in the race for Dem Gubernatorial nominee in 2018.

The poll, commissioned by Bill Ballenger, is immensely interesting.

Fieger, nicknamed "the million dollar mouth," previously ran against Gov. Engler in 1998, getting beat down by over 20 points.

A lot has changed since then though, 2018 isn't 1998.

Why should Republicans worry about a Fieger campaign?

Michigan voters would never back a rich, controversial, populist outsider with a mouth as big as his checkbook, interesting hair, and a big league love of the spotlight... ;)

According to The Ballenger Report:

"The poll found Fieger holds a big lead in Detroit, with 53% support to El-Sayed’s 21% and Whitmer’s 9%. Fieger also leads in out-county Wayne, with 46% to Whitmer’s 15% and El-Sayed’s 11%.
Fieger swept the balance of the Tri-County SE Michigan area as well. The survey shows him leading Whitmer in Oakland County, 27%-21%,and Macomb County, 33%-23%, with no support whatsoever registering for El-Sayed in either county.
Whitmer scores best on her native mid-Michigan turf, with 46% to Fieger’s 20% and El-Sayed’s 3%. She also shows a substantial lead over Fieger in West Michigan, the Tri-Cities/Thumb; and Northern Lower Michigan. Whitmer and Fieger are tied in the Upper Peninsula. El-Sayed fails to register any higher than 8% in any of those geographical areas.
Fieger holds leads within the poll’s margin of error among both male and female voters. Fieger also leads Whitmer by a slim margin among younger voters (18-39) and older voters (65+), while the two are virtually tied among voters age 40-64."

Stay tuned!

No Boys Or Pictures Allowed: "Sharia Prom" At Public School In Hamtramck Causes Controversy

By Brandon Hall
(Email Him At WestMIPolitics@Gmail.com)

No boys? No pictures? No cellphones? What the hell is going on?!

Welcome to Hamtramck's girls only prom, an event designed to let Muslim girls celebrate the high school tradition without pissing off radicals in the region.

The 6th annual "Princess Prom" was held last weekend, though I think "Sharia Prom" is far more fitting...

According to Heat Street:

"With the goal of creating a “safe space” in mind, a Detroit school has set out to hold a girls-only prom to celebrate traditional Muslim customs. It’s being created for girls who would otherwise be prohibited by their ultraconservative Muslim families from going to regular proms, where attendees are allowed to have fun and dance with members of the opposite sex in good old American tradition.
Hamtramck High School’s girls-only “Princess Prom” was first organized in 2012 by a group of five Muslim girls to give them the opportunity to go to a “safe space” prom. In 2016, 230 girls showed up. This year, they’re expecting at least 250 attendees.
According to Michigan Live, the event is “intended to create a safe space for Muslim girls who normally cover up in hijab to let their hair down in an environment with no boys and no cellphones.”
In normal circumstances, Muslim girls and women from ultraconservative backgrounds are not allowed to expose their hair in public, among many other strict religious prohibitions for women. With a cellphone ban in place, no one will be able to share photos of them with their hair displayed to social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook."
The event is a disturbing placation to extremists who think women aren't to be seen, nor heard.
I am fine with the girls figuring out a way to have some fun in a difficult situation, it just sucks they find themselves in this predicament in the first place...

Traverse City May Become A "Sanctuary City" For Illegal Immigrants

By Brandon Hall
(Email Him At WestMIPolitics@Gmail.com)

Traverse City is one of Michigan's greatest towns, more known for beautiful lakefront views and cherries than politics... However, if some have their way, it could become a "sanctuary city" for illegal immigrants soon...

According to IPR:

"Officials in Traverse City are discussing the possibility of “sanctuary city” status. The city’s Human Rights Commission has debated the idea at its meetings over the last few months. The declaration would mean police would not report undocumented immigrants to the federal government.

Mayor Jim Carruthers says the conversation came up because of recent changes in federal immigration policy. He says city staff had reservations about the idea, so he referred it to the Human Rights Commission.
Carruthers  supports the move, despite concerns that the city could lose out on federal funding.
“It is a controversial topic," says Carruthers. "When the current leadership in Washington is tying it all to federal dollars, that scares small towns like us. I understand the cautiousness come out of our leadership for that reason.”
Carruthers says Traverse City Police do not currently target undocumented people, but they do report them to federal immigration officials."
Apparently some town leaders weren't dissuaded by the debacle in Lansing a few weeks ago, where the council passed a resolution declaring Lansing a sanctuary city only to rescind it shortly after...

Stay tuned!

Dennis The Menace Returns To Michigan After Controversial Stint In The Virgin Islands

By Brandon Hall
(Email him at WestMiPolitics@Gmail.com)
Dennis Lennox is returning to Michigan.
According to MIRS:

"Dennis LENNOX will be returning to Michigan to do strategic communications and public affairs consulting after a year as state party executive director in the Virgin Islands, he announced today.

His accomplishments in the Virgin Islands included managing a $2.1 million budget and overseeing a “big fundraiser” with Interior Secretary Ryan ZINKE, “which was believed to be the first political event with a Trump administration cabinet secretary,” he said.

He will also return to tweeting at @dennislennox."

Not making the article was the fact Lennox also testified at a hearing and walked away to a safe space after being confronted by Virgin Island Senators...

"Senators in the Virgin Islands had a "date" with Dennis Lennox recently at a hearing regarding proposed legislation, and they definitely swiped left...

Lennox has inserted himself in ongoing election drama there involving fellow Michigander John Yob's successful bid for a delegate spot in Cleveland a few months ago.

One Senator even quoted a WMP article while tearing into the controversial Michigan political operative. Lennox eventually bailed on the hearing before it was completed..."

Schuette Prosecuting Emergency Managers For A Loan His Office Approved

By Brandon Hall
(Email Him At WestMIPolitics@Gmail.com)

(This story is a few months old, but I believe it has gone under the radar and deserves much more attention.)

A controversial loan now the subject of Attorney General Schuette's case against two former Flint Emergency Managers was once approved by Schuette's office...

>>>Meet Jeff Wright, The Man Who Poisoned Flint

According to Paul Egan of the Detroit Free Press:

"Attorney General Bill Schuette's office signed off on an environmental order that is central to new criminal charges Schuette filed last week in his Flint drinking water investigation, records show.
In bringing charges on Dec. 20 against two former emergency managers and two former City of Flint public works officials, Schuette and his investigators said a March 2014 administrative consent order issued by the Department of Environmental Quality never should have been issued, because it was based on a "sham" environmental calamity manufactured in part by former Flint emergency managers Darnell Earley and Gerald Ambrose  and former city officials Howard Croft and Daugherty Johnson.
All four defendants face 20-year felonies for conspiracy and false pretenses and have entered not guilty pleas.
One of the three signatures on the administrative consent order (ACO), which the Free Press first scrutinized in a May article, is that of Assistant Attorney General Robert Reichel of the AG's environment, natural resources and agriculture division.
Signing on behalf of Schuette, Reichel approved the order "as to form."
Schuette alleges that Flint, which was under a state-appointed emergency manager at the time, was unable to borrow its share of the money to participate in the $285-million Karegnondi Water Authority pipeline to Lake Huron. The project was being pushed by Genesee County and Flint wanted to leave the Detroit system, which had been supplying it with treated Lake Huron water from Lake Huron, in favor of the new pipeline, which would provide the city with untreated Lake Huron water. By using an ordered environmental cleanup at a sludge lagoon used by the Flint Water Treatment Plant and tying that project to the KWA development, officials were able to use the administrative consent order to keep the KWA debt from counting against Flint's almost non-existent borrowing capacity. Schuette alleges the "sham" administrative consent order, which one of his assistants signed off on, also had the effect of forcing Flint to get its drinking water from the Flint River — with disastrous results — until the KWA project was completed.

Andrea Bitely, a spokeswoman for Schuette, said the AG was aware of the sign-off from his office when he brought the charges, and suggested Reichel may have signed it based on false information provided by another state agency, the DEQ."

Controversial Michigan Blogger Accuseing Hannity Of "Creepy" Sexual Advances May Be Sued

Hannity, left, Schlussel, right

By Brandon Hall
(Email Him At WestMIPolitics@Gmail.com)

The blogger accusing Sean Hannity of "creepy" sexual advances is from Michigan, and she's been known to target people with flimsy evidence in the past.

Debbie Schlussel, a Southfield area attorney and a conservative blogger, has been in the spotlight after she claims the Fox News host hit on her and asked her to come to his hotel room after an event in Detroit...

Now Hannity says he might sue her...

According to reports:

"Fox News host Sean Hannity took to Twitter on Sunday night to shoot down critics and even hint at a libel lawsuits against anyone accusing him of wrongdoing, writing, "I have a massive army."

Hannity started off the barrage of tweets writing, "A lot of time with an army of attorneys. Topics include; libel, slander, defamation, tortious interference. Stay tuned."

Hannity said his issue is "way way way bigger than any one individual," when a follower suggested that if former Fox news guest Debbie Schlussel backs off, he should go after her attorney.

Schlussel claimed last month that Hannity pressured her to come to his hotel room during a radio interview with KFAQ radio in Tulsa, Oklahoma. When asked if she had ever been sexually harassed at Fox News, Schlussel replied, "Only by Sean Hannity, not Bill O'Reilly ... He tried to get me to go back to the hotel after the show."

Interesting...

"No credible, reasonable journalist should have ever taken her serious. Her story is #fakenews but mainstream media runs with it," Scott Hagerstrom said in a Facebook statement.

Hagerstrom was the subject of an outlandish Schlussel hit piece in 2015 where she accused him of supporting the Black Panthers and Hezbollah...

Johnson Legislation Would End Crony Capitalism From The Michigan Strategic Fund

State Rep. Steven Johnson, right, with Congressman Amash

By Brandon Hall
(Email Him At WestMIPolitics@Gmail.com)

Freshman State Rep. Steven Johnson has quickly gained a reputation as a Conservative fighter among grassroots circles, and now he's taking the fight to the crony capitalism pushed out by the Michigan Strategic Fund.

According to a press release:

"State Rep. Steve Johnson (has) introduced legislation to repeal the Michigan Strategic Fund Act.
“Programs such as art and cultural grants as well as business and tourism attraction can be more efficiently run by private sector coalitions than by state government,” said Johnson, R-Wayland. “Repealing the Michigan Strategic Fund Act would free up money for projects such as road funding, or a well-deserved income tax reduction for Michigan residents.”

The release notes that the "Michigan Strategic Fund (MSF) was established in 1984 for the purpose of promoting economic development across Michigan. Since then, the MSF’s role has changed and expanded in many ways beyond what the scope of a governmental agency should be, Johnson said. In the 2016-17 budget, $251 million overall was appropriated for MSF programs...
Earlier this week, the Michigan Strategic Fund Board allowed a southeast Michigan steel company to inherit a tax credit that was originally awarded to a different company. Johnson said this recent example clearly demonstrates why state programs such as the Michigan Strategic Fund should not be involved in picking winners and losers through the use of taxpayer-funded credits and incentives."
Johnson's bill is a whopping one sentence long... :)
"Enacting section 1. The Michigan strategic fund act, 1984 PA 270, MCL 125.2001 to 125.2094, is repealed."

Stay tuned!

Grot Brings Ronna To Macomb For Reagan Day Fundraiser As SOS Rumors Swirl

By Brandon Hall
(Email Him At WestMIPolitics@Gmail.com)

10th District GOP Chair Stan Grot, also the clerk for Shelby Township in Macomb, is bringing RNC Chair Ronna Romney McDaniel back home to Michigan for a fundraiser later this month.

Grot is rumored to be seeking the Republican nomination for Secretary of State in 2018, and given other rumored candidates include State Senators Mike Kowall and Arlan Meekhof, Grot is looking like a damn good choice in many conservative circles...

According to Conservative Intel:

"Although no formal announcement has been made, there is talk that the 10th District GOP Chairman could be making a bid for Secretary of State in 2018. The rumor is being spread by grassroots conservatives encouraging Grot to enter the race because of a six point voter integrity plan he’s called for.
Grot, right, with RNC Chair Ronna Romney McDaniel, left, and RNC Committeewoman Kathy Berden, center

The plan would:
  • Require citizenship documentation for new voter registration
  • Implement mandatory photo I.D. before voting
  • Purge voters registered in multiple states
  • Increase oversight of Detroit public accuracy test
  • Utilize social security database to remove deceased voters
  • Audit cities and townships that lack competency to conduct elections
Previously, Grot served as the Assistant Secretary of State under Candice Miller. If he were to run, inviting the RNC Chairwoman back to Macomb County could be part of his strategy to reinvigorate Trump supporters and turn them out in 2018.
Details of the event are as follows:
10th Congressional District GOP Ronald Reagan Dinner
